Backed by the DETR, Going for Green is the principal sustainable development
citizen’s initiative in the UK for promoting public understanding and
involvement in issues relating to sustainable development. Its Sustainable
Communities Programme, funded by the National Lottery Charities Board,
provides support and opportunities for people to take action locally.

Groundwork is a major environmental regeneration charity, active in
150 towns and cities. By working in partnership with the public, private
and voluntary sectors, it develops projects that link environmental, social
and economic regeneration. Local Groundwork Trusts develop and promote
environmental projects in their own localities.

Shell Better Britain Campaign encourages action by community groups to improve
their local quality of life in ways that are environmentally, socially and economically
sustainable. It supports a network of over 26,000 people who are active in their
local community with a newsletter and information service about local sustainability
issues. It awards £250,000 each year to local groups and innovative research
projects. Groups are invited to join the free Campaign Network.
